Concern over out-of-town cabbies

A STAGGERING number of out-of-town cabbies have been granted licences to work in North Lincolnshire, new figures have revealed.

Between February 2008 and January 2009, a total of 80 out of 604 applications were granted to drivers from out of town compared to 14 out of 546 applications the previous year.

Council chiefs confirmed that drivers from as far afield as Preston, Huddersfield and Bradford were among those granted a licence to operate in North Lincolnshire.

Kuljinder Juj, chairman of the Scunthorpe and District Taxi Association, was bewildered by the council's licensing committee which approved the applications.

He said: "This has confirmed what our campaign has been all about.

"There has been a great influx of people coming from outside the area in the last year because of the council's reckless policy."

North Lincolnshire Council's licensing committee is currently consulting with taxi drivers on a revised policy.
