Danger of city’s rogue cabbies AS you may be aware, there has been a lot of debate regarding taxis and the use of out of town plated vehicles. Then we have the issue of rogues and predators prowling the streets at night putting people’s lives in danger. Rogues being the individuals who work as taxi drivers in our city without the proper licences or insurance. Predators being individuals like Andrew Beal, the convicted sex attacker, who if it hadn’t been for a taxi driver would have successfully got out of the city with a young female in his car. Now, let’s look at it from a member of the public’s point of view. Let’s say they come to Newcastle for the weekend. During their stay they see taxis with red plates, white plates, green plates and cars with no plates, but company names on them. They see white top signs with taxi on them, they see yellow top signs with taxi on them. They see top signs with company names. They see cars with no top signs. The variety of taxis in Newcastle city centre is making it confusing and very dangerous for the public and harder to police, making it easier for predators and rogues. Now you may be thinking why is this allowed? Simply because some larger firms have exploited the law that states a Hackney carriage vehicle can work outside their licensed area as a private hire vehicle. So what can you do to help put an end to the disaster waiting to happen? Complain to your local authority. Ask for locally licensed drivers when booking a taxi, only use taxis from legitimate ranks, check the vehicle is licensed by checking that their identification plate is fixed to the back of the vehicle and the driver’s badge is clearly visible, and always report drivers to the police if you have any suspicions. I hope if I ever go to Newcastle I don't get drunk. All them colours may make me feel ill and apart from which as sensible as the advice maybe when you're drunk it all goes out the window |
