Unlicensed cabbies hit in the pocket

'Out-of-towners' unlawfully picked up fares

Minicab drivers from out of town have been hit in the pocket after plying for trade in Milton Keynes.

The three, working for South Northants-based Speedline, were caught with others during a Milton Keynes Council sting operation in December.

Zafar Iqbal and Mohammed Kafeel of Luton and Quais Aziz, of Coniston Way, Bletchley, each admitted plying for hire and having no insurance - automatically invalidated by plying for hire - when they appeared before Milton Keynes Magistrates Court this week.

All were fined £350 with £234.27 costs and had six penalty points imposed on their driving licence.

An MK Council taxi licensing spokesman said it always urged people not to get in private hire cabs that had not been properly booked rather than legitimate Hackney Carriage - traditional taxis you pick up at a rank.

"We will continue to prosecute any drivers we catch unlawfully plying for hire in Milton Keynes.

"Not only is it unlawful but potentially dangerous to passengers climbing into an unlicensed cab because it effectively means the driver is uninsured," he said adding MKC would ask South Northants Council to deal with its licensed drivers appropriately.
