CCTV to be fitted in taxis to cut down on crime


HACKNEY cab drivers in Liverpool city centre are to have CCTV cameras fitted to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.

The joint initiative by Merseyside police and Liverpool Chamber of Commerce came about after evidence showed cab drivers were one of the most highly victimised occupations.

The CCTV systems have as many as four cameras capturing images inside and outside the cabs as well as recording on to hard disc.

Cab drivers can also download images from the system for use as evidence.

Dave McLeod, who is a drivers’ representative with the Unite union, said he was strongly in favour of taxi CCTV systems.

He added: “In my view CCTV is worth its weight in gold. On one occasion I used my system to help the police locate a child kidnapped by his estranged father and taken to London.

“Another time a car ran into my cab and the driver was disputing responsibility until I showed them the CCTV footage and she held her hands up.”

Peter Jones, head of the Chamber’s Business Crime Direct team said: “Evaluation of the scheme has proved that all drivers felt safer with a CCTV system and 96% of drivers thought their systems deterred crime and assaults.

Detective Sergeant Frank Stott, of Merseyside Police Crime Prevention, said: “We support this initiative completely.”

It's a shame they don't consider the wellbeing of PH Drivers or perhaps they drive in a crime free world and free from victimisation

The system in question costs two thousand five hundred pounds. Did the article actually say who foots the cost?

The reason they probably don't mention the PH driver is because their passengers are traceable and they must be pre-booked.

Dundee are running a trial with six taxi's fitted with CCTV, this has been going on for the past 4/5 months and as far as I am led to believe there hasn't been a single incident in any of the cars.

Not all are traceable. They ring up on a pay as you go mobile phone going to wherever. It's not always a house address they are going to. I agree that most of PH customers are traceable but then most of all customers are ok

They need the cameras after the programme I watched last night on Virgin TV, they had a guy called the Steve the Frenchman on with Danny Dyer, he was on about something that happend 2 weeks ago when someone took a shot at him. They went out onto the streets to interview the local scumbags, they all had their faces covered because they were calling this Steve Frenchman a grass. It looked a bad place indded.

Yep....the place needs sorted out by the Luftwaffe......again

LOL just what I thought when I was watching the programme, I thought hey up has the Luftwaffe paid a visit??

steve the frenchman caused countless misery on individuals down to his violent nature,he is now older and rich and doesn,t want to face the violent culture which made him what he is ,dave courtney is another one,whatever happened to live by the knife die by the knife?or shotgun

That's a bit harsh I hope it does as intended and cuts down the crime. I think however it will just move the crime and hopefully not into the vehicles of PH drivers. I don't think anybody should have to work with the threat of violence hanging over them.
