Brighton police blame pedestrians for accidents


Nearly two thirds of people run over on the streets of Brighton and Hove this year caused the accident themselves, according to police.

In the last three months 21 people have been seriously injured when they have been knocked down on the city streets.

When traffic police investigated each of the 56 cases where pedestrians were hit by cars, lorries or buses since New Year’s Day, they found 36 of them - or 64% - were caused by the victim themselves.

Officers say many accidents have happened at or near pedestrian crossings, where people on foot have either ignored the crossing and walked into the road nearby or walked across when the lights were red.

Acting Inspector James Biggs of Brighton and Hove road policing unit said: “Pedestrians must accept they share the responsibility of ensuring their own safety when crossing the road.

“They can’t just rely on thinking that it’s a drivers’ responsibility to avoid people stepping out into the road.

“They need to choose when and where to cross wisely.”

Sussex Police, who are tasked with cutting the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads, say carelessness is frustrating their attempts to save lives.

Insp Biggs said: “People still choose to take unnecessary risks even when there is a pedestrian crossing very nearby.

“I would ask all pedestrians to take care when crossing the road and if there is a pedestrian crossing nearby for goodness sake use it."

In the last six months the road policing unit has issued a series of warnings to road users.

Bus and taxi drivers were asked not to drive aggressively to clear pedestrians out of their way.

Officers pledged to crack down on cyclists riding through red lights and on pavements around the city and issued on-the-spot fines to riders who ignored cycle lanes.

The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership has launched a campaign called Safer Roads, Safer Communities: Sharing the Responsibility.

Spokesman Neil Hopkins said: ”We are working to make the roads of the county safer for all users.

“All road users need to think about their actions, including pedestrians.”

Green Councillor Ian Davey, who represents the central Brighton St Peter’s and North Laine ward on Brighton and Hove City Council, said changes to street layouts, as well as more awareness by pedestrians, is needed to prevent accidents.

He said projects like the ‘shared space’ on New Road, where cars and pedestrians have equal rights of way, should be extended across the city.

If I remember a Sussex Police Inspector said a while ago that cab drivers were aiming at pedestrians, and causing loads of injuries.

Now someone I know wrote to the Chief Constable and asked for the accurate details to back up that assertion.

The complainant didn't ever get any stats, all he got was an apology.

I have hit 2 pedestrians in the last 6 yrs in Btn & Hove. One went into hostipal with a bad leg.
