I smell a politician thats desperately clutching at straws to try and justify the unjustifiable.

Im scottish PH..not in Edinburgh though...maybe all PH types should consider suing mr MacAskill for his slanderous remarks that imply all PH are Criminals..

I would have thought at £50k+ a time, buying and selling plates would have attracted many of the undesirables that he hopes to rid the trade of.
Especially as many change hands for cash, with few questions asked and not always in a transaction declared to HMRC.............

Yes I do that's why I'm confused now. How can somebody who sells his plate then suggest de-limitation

Erstwhile MacAskill, allegedly a Lawyer by training which would ascribe to him some degree of intelligence, reckons that restriction is needed to ensure that organised crime doesn't invade Edinburgh's taxi trade. MacAskill :- The less regulated private hire has expanded wildly during restriction of taxis, it's already become infested by crime - attested to by police concerns. It's a breeding ground. Yet, you would expand the breeding ground further. (CEC's deputy council leader has private hire interests) De-limiting the hacks, with owner drivers, would help reduce PH and the opportunity for criminal involvement. More available, widely recognised, highly regulated taxis would make it easier for vulnerable members of the public to hail a cab a peak periods, reducing the need to seek dangerous alternatives just to get home. More available cabs at peak periods would clear the streets quicker, reducing potential crime, reduce police intervention and improve public safety. The question for you MacAskill, is why wouldn't any responsible Scottish government, or council, be actively pursuing these distinct benefits? Over 74% of UK local authorities already have, Aberdeen and West Lothian in Scotland recently, as is the London model. So, what's the real reason MacAskill and his SNP cronies on Edinburgh's council protect vested interests to the endangerment of the public, and the wholesale denial of taxi workers' fundamental rights to ply their trade without let or hindrance just like other workers?
