Taxi drivers going places with new qualifications

TAXI drivers picked up plenty of tips about their profession after completing an NVQ course.

Thirty three drivers from Nippy Taxis received their certificates in Road Passenger Vehicle Transport at a Mayor's Parlour ceremony.

Boss Gary Ledden said: "We've always felt that staff training is the key to business success, and we wanted our drivers to all work to the same high standards of customer care and professionalism. However, until recently, there were no industry-recognised qualifications that taxi drivers could take to brush up on their skills, and as a result, we weren't sure where to turn.

"We then learnt of an NVQ which was specifically aimed at the public transport industry, and we jumped at the chance to take part."

The course covered subjects including customer care and health and safety. Drivers completed their coursework around their shifts, and once-a-week open sessions were held in which drivers could chat with their assessors about their progress.

Mmmm everything they learned is going to make them a better driver?? We had the idiots out in green coats on our rank yesterday doing the so calle driving test. There's also been a little snippet in our local paper this week about drivers gaining their NVQ's.

a new one just cropped up, seen the York Stn taxis renewal form for the Stn £1250 permit

all York Station Permit holders who have radio will have to go on and complete a "radio course" " to qualify for a Stn permit

and drivers cannot wear a black coat [cos they have got black cars]

Not just commission i hear these so called assessors have expense accounts that would make a euro MP green with envy

I've heard lots of things about this too, but, without actual proof there isn't a lot that can be done. I'm an assessor and I'm pi$$ poor so I can't verify what you say. Unfortunately when money is involved there are always unscrupulous people around to take advantage of situations. I'm a great believer in training as you are probably aware and I'm dissappointed to see drivers taken advantage of in this way. Drivers however are like taxi customers in so far as they complain to the wrong people.

The system of giving people a commission to obtain work is nothing new. It's not immoral as such that's just like tele marketing etc. My gripe is with the people who first said it was wrong to train drivers and then did everything in their power to ensure drivers are trained and then make a mint out of doing it.

The trade should have had a proper input to the training syllabus, but, as would appear to be the norm they sat back and let it happen thinking if they did nothing it would go away

Where theres public money involved there always seems to be corruption
but not every one has the same amount of time as you seem to have to fix it

Mr Ledden is not on any commission, he is merely a smart operator who recognises the benefits of having qualified drivers, it gives the public confidence to do business with a forward thinking company

My daughter is at uni getting qualifications and it's costing thousands of pounds. What makes you so special that you shouldn't have to pay anything towards any qualifications you might need to do a job

Does Mr Ledden have cctv in all his cars far more important in my opinion
