Cabbies complete college courses


TAXI drivers at Blueline cabs in Harrogate have been awarded their joint NVQ and BTEC qualifications.

Gareth Bentley, Harrogate Council's senior licensing officer, awarded successful learners with certificates at a presentation ceremony held at Harrogate College on March 30.

More than 30 Harrogate taxi and private hire drivers have completed both a BTEC and an NVQ Level 2 course in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving developed by Go Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport.

The course was funded by the Learning and Skills Council's Train to Gain service.

Improve image

The combined BTEC and an NVQ Level 2 course in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving have been introduced to improve the image of the industry, raise professionalism and allow drivers to act as ambassadors for the region.

Hull College has delivered training and assessment to drivers to help them to gain skills to provide the best standard of service.

Mr Bentley told the assembled drivers how impressed he was that so many members of Blueline had voluntarily undertaken the training, and he was greatly encouraged to learn that the remaining members were either in the process of taking the course or were waiting to start.

He said this commitment to raising professional standards would not only benefit the drivers concerned but would undoubtedly assist in presenting a good image to all visitors to our town.

Conference competition

At this time, with many towns competing for the conference and exhibition business, added professionalism in the public transport sector in Harrogate had to be a plus, he added.

Before the presentations, Angela Garczynski, managing director of Norton Webb Ltd, who are responsible for providing the tuition and assessing for the combined BTEC and NVQ training courses, said: "Blueline Taxis were the first company in Harrogate to have taken full advantage of the training provided by Hull College.

"They have made full use of our training resources and learning materials to help them to achieve their qualifications and have worked closely with us to promote the qualification to all of their drivers, with an excellent take up level.

"Blueline Taxis and Norton Webb have really shown what can be done in North Yorkshire and I'm sure many others will follow."

How many punters ask if the driver is qualified in these make work courses?

I have GCE's, City and Guilds, a cycling proficiency badge and on OU degree, and not forgetting my NAMET, of course.

Do I need a NVQ in walking and chewing gum?

You will be over qualified for the Level II NVQ you might have to pay for it

I pased the Btec with 92 per cent but why is it not possible to find out what i got wrong so i may learn something or is this just further proof that
its just a load of bollox

We had print outs so we could see which area needed work in it. I think if we wanted specifics we could have asked for them. I think cos this is just a pass or fail test perhaps they think learners aren't interested in what they got wrong so long as they pass

So which areas needed work on and why not just simply pick out the stupid drivers that needed working on

Thats why these courses were introduced in the first place wasnt it
to catch the stupid ones yet here they forced every one to do them

So you are saying that Bournmouth council said they introduced these courses to catch out stupid people. Not very pc. I think perhaps they were convinced of the merits of this course (and there are some) by the very people who are making a shed load money from them now. Like I said I believe taxi drivers should be trained and some need it more than others, but, at the end of the day all drivers should have the same basic qualification.

Good to see most councils have more common sense than Bournemouth
introducing it for new drivers optional for others and not using threats to force good experienced driers to take it
