It would be interesting to hear the opinion of Gusmac or anybody else working in Aberdeen, about the problems that derestriction never solved.

Like there is still a shortage of taxis at night and the council has been forced to look at options which could force more taxis on the road when they are needed. This is less of a problem in restricted areas where many taxis are double shifted and provide better cover at most times.

The biggest problem is the restrictions are still with us, despite the limit being lifted.
New applicants, if you can consider someone who has held a licence for anything up to 15 years "new", are only permitted to license WAV vehicles, while those not considered "new" can license saloon type vehicles. The costs are considerably more for the WAV operators, even by ACC's own figures.
The alternatives are renting or PH (Aberdeen PH drivers have to sit the same knowledge test as Taxi drivers so all bar 2 hold taxi//PH driver dual badges.)
Shortage of cabs on nightshift has never been a problem, except at weekends. No more than any area, restricted or otherwise.
The recession has sorted that one here, as I suspect it has everywhere else where drivers can choose the hours they want to work.

PH seagulling isn't common here, but Aberdeenshire cabs do it all the time. They don't have any of the above restrictions.
We also have a number of completely unlicensed scumbags as well.
The cops and councils do nothing to stop either of them.

Aberdeen's problem is the same as Dundee as i have said before as a dr regulated city we still have more private hire going on than hacks.

I do think that the situation can be different in other cities .I think the government should have some sort of equation that could meet the needs of every city IE population,

I know that might be difficult is cites that have a lot of tourists but i am sure some sort of ratio could be sorted out.

The market should decide the level. End of.

It works in every other marketplace.

It's only greed and fear that stops it happening in Edinburgh.

Government should be looking at this objectively. In Edinburgh government has set itself above the citizens. Ab ove the law.

The council thinks it should dictate. Politicians, in self interest join the gravy train and do nothing to control the behemoth.

Perhaps the councils problem is that it doesn't want its wings clipped. And if taxis expand, and their transport scam fails, then their necks are on the line.

Oh good.

All the drivers difficulties, their exploitation, is because politicians fear being found out by the voters.

Quality.

Same in Kirkcaldy 70 Hackney plates and over 100 private hires. Never a chance of derestriction happening here no room in ranks for the exisiting plates as it is. Hassles with Traffic Wardens all day every day due to overflowing ranks. All these lads who want deregulation should have a look at themselves they are the ones full of self-interest buy a business like awbody else (or do you have bad credit)

In Edinburgh you need to pass the knowledge test to drive a taxi. A licence would be of no use to anyone without a qualified driver behind the wheel. All you need are quality controls. If you set the bar high enough you control entry into your market.

Get a grip of what mate your the one that needs a grip!! One Ph company has over 30 Phs and does the vast majority of local contracts (NHS and Social Work etc). The rest of the PHs are used by smaller companys (ie one man bands with a hack and a Ph) Rest are used by people employed elsewhere and only come out on a Saturday FACT. There is only one main rank in the town that holds 18 yes 18 cars where do the rest go yes round and round the circuit. Lets see lets open it up and make everything hacks where does the 170+ cars all go. Aye mate GET A GRIP
