Last week at a packed meeting of Southends Cab drivers both Private Hire and Hackney carriage Drivers were told of the benefits of joining the GMB Professional Drivers Branch.

Many Drivers joined on the spot and many pledged to join soon, after being informed of the GMBs many benefits, Drivers were extremely vocal on the many problems facing the trade locally including a council seemingly determined NOT too listen to the trades problems, Ranks, too many Cabs.non enforcement against touts, excessive Licencing Fees and many other issues were raised.

Terence Flanagan Branch Secretary GMB Professional Drivers Branch said;

" These issues are typical of the problems confronting Cab Drivers nationwide, our answer is to make the politicans accept their responsibilities, clearly this Council cares not a jot that its appalling policies and disastrous Licencing Department are on the verge of destroying the industry in Southend. We are sure the electorate will not be amused when inevitably there is a lack of cabs inthe area. Naturally this council will held entirely responsible for their actions in destroying this vital part of the transport infrastructure in the area. We call for an immediate stop to be put on the issue of both PH licences and Hackney Licences and Plates. The council may rest assured that the GMBs stimulte the trades activities within the area, our members will no longer tolerate this councils abhorrent attacks upon the trade!"
