Taxi driver is locked up for sex assault
A TAXI driver has been jailed for six months after sexually assaulting a woman in his cab.
Gentian Duka, of Cavendish Road, Eastbourne, locked his 21-year-old victim in his car and laughed as he attacked her.
Twenty-six-year-old Duka, who worked for Eastbourne and Country Taxis, was taking the nurse home from her friend's house in Eastbourne in November 2007.
Duka shouted at her to give him her phone number, started asking personal questions, then put his hand on her thigh and tried to kiss her, the jury at his trial last month were told. The woman rejected his advances and asked him to let her go but he laughed and sexually assaulted her.
During the trial at Lewes Crown Court, the victim said she became scared and tried to move away but Duka's grip on her leg became tighter. As the cab pulled up outside her house he leant across and locked the door. She said she told him to stop but he continued to assault her.
Duka denied the offence and claimed the woman had pleaded with him to go on a date, kissed him on the cheek and asked for his phone number. But Duka was found guilty by a majority verdict at last month's trial. He was sentenced at Hove Crown Court last Thursday and Recorder Jeremy Gold, QC, jailed him for six months.
Duka was also banned for seven years from working as a driver in circumstances where he would be alone with females, and has been ordered to register as a sex offender for the same period.
The recorder told Duka he had been trusted to get the young woman home safely but had instead put her through a 'horrible experience'.
He said Duka had denied the offence at trial and still refused to accept what he had done.
