'Trojan' taxi is cutting crime

UNDERCOVER cops in a cop car disguised as a taxi have been on patrol on the streets of Pendle. And as a result they were able to keep an eye on situations without anyone suspecting they were being watched.

They dealt with everything from underage drinkers to assaults, grabbing one youth illegally carrying a knife and witnessing the arrest of a drug suspect in the heart of Nelson.

They even got overtaken at speed on a roundabout on the edge of a 20 m.p.h. zone by a car . W hen the driver was chased and spoken to, he said he did not like taxis!

The undercover operation is a joint venture between Lancashire Constabulary and the Safer Travel Unit. Safer Travel is run by Lancashire County Council, working with local bus operators.

Called Operation Trojan, it was originally set up to catch yobs throwing stones at vehicles. Police Community Support Officer Faye Kellett, who is seconded to Safer Travel, said: "In particular, the concern was missiles being thrown at buses and taxis in Lancashire. But it now also involves underage drinking and anti-social behaviour."

The operation has had a big impact. For instance, in Burnley it has led to a 66% reduction, and it is now in the finals of the Lancashire Problem Oriented Policing awards.

On Friday night, the "taxi" went out and about in Nelson, Brierfield and Barrowford, backed by other "unsigned" police cars. First call was to Heyhead Park, Brierfield, after reports of children being threatened by a youth. During the search, officers came across another group in the park and one 17-year-old was found be drinking under age. He was also found to have a craft-type knife - an illegal object to carry without a good reason.

The youth then ran off, but the following morning he handed himself in to police. He is due to appear before Pennine Youth Court on Monday charged with possession of a bladed article.

Next, a call to Castle Street, Nelson, where a pregnant woman was complaining she had been kicked in the stomach and needed hospital treatment. Then another assault, this time outside a takeaway in Burnley Road, Brierfield. The victim had an injury to his head.

The fake taxi was travelling down a 20 m.p.h. zone in Larch Street, Nelson, when a car overtook it at some speed as it came to the mini-roundabout at the bottom of the hill. The car was subsequently stopped and Sgt Keith Beckley spoke to the driver. Sgt Beckley said: "He hadn't been drinking, but he said his reason for overtaking us was that he was fed up of taxis!"

Officers spent time looking for underage drinkers, and in one case poured away alcohol which a 17-year-old was drinking on the street. They also checked out off-licences, and reports of someone selling booze to kids from the back of a van.

Then there were calls to a car park in Rigby Street, Nelson, after reports of drugs. When they arrived, officers had already arrested three men, one of whom was on the floor being handcuffed as the "taxi" got there.
One 34-year-old Nelson man has been charged with possession of cannabis, but the two other men were released without charge.

Operation Trojan gives police officers the chance to keep an eye out for bad behaviour in Pendle – and it will be happening again soon. So bear in mind - you never know when a taxi is full of police officers!
