Taxi driver loses cab in row over parking outside his home

A TAXI driver’s cab has been towed away – after he racked up more than £22,000 in fines for parking outside his home. Four years ago, Falhad and Julie Mamodesen were among the first families to move into homes in James Wick Court, on Colchester’s new Balkerne Heights estate.

They claim that at the time they were promised their own allocated parking space. Months later, when the development was completed, the couple were told the only place for their car was their garage – which was far too small for Mr Mamodesen’s seven-seater taxi.

His wife explained: “There is nowhere else to park around here, except St Mary’s Car Park, which is £10 a day. “We couldn’t afford that, so we parked outside the house. “The parking company kept giving us tickets, which accumulated and accumulated.”

The couple were furious parking enforcement firm Central Ticketing repeatedly issued tickets, claiming it had no choice, so they refused to pay the fines. The tickets mounted up, and when the Mamodesens owed more than £22,500, their car was towed away.

Mrs Mamodesen said: “The car was still on hire purchase, so we are paying it off.” The couple, who have four children, have been sent dozens of letters from different debt collection agencies, each trying to collect some of the money owed in fines.

Mrs Mamodesen added: “Now we have to pay to hire a car from the taxi company, too. We rang the parking company and it said it couldn’t release the car until the tickets had been paid. “We don’t know what to do.”

Jason Key, of Central Ticketing, would only say: “The landlord requested removal of the vehicle because the repeat offender refused to change his ways.” Mrs Mamodesen added: “It originally gave us a parking permit, but then we were told it wasn’t valid.

“We did ring up when we were first given a ticket, but because we’re with a housing association and the road is privately-owned, we were just passed around.” She added: “It is terrible, it has just been a nightmare.”

They cannot remove the vehicle as it blongs to the finance company, and it cannot be used to pay off the aleged dept as its a tool of the trade
