Meter plan angers taxi drivers

Cabs in part of Lancashire will have to fork out for new calendar controlled meters.

Wyre Council has decided to make the new taxi meters mandatory in hackney carriages and private hire vehicles.

They automatically change tariffs to cover late night charges and special tariffs to deal with Christmas, New Year and Bank Holidays.

But the idea has sparked anger among some cab bosses, who are looking at a bill of £300 to fit each meter.

Taxi licence holders in the borough now have until January 1, 2012, to get the meters fitted.

sell the old ones on ebay

tax relief on the new ones

will balance out, get the true cost down to £150

once fitted the council has nothing left to insist on, but the taxis can use the "£300" meter cost as a lever for the next rate rise

anyone vat regd will get that back too

plus theres more than two years to the deadline

Plus they will have new, more reliable meters into the bargain.

no, to any budding hackney driver looking for a bargain of course, or someone already plated whose meter has gone BER

personally ive never thought a meter tucked under a dashboard was convincing when trying to be a hackney, but hey ho

The Digitax F2 RTC

£290 inc fitting and VAT

(£252 plus vat)

get £75 for your old one and claim the vat back off the new one....

£177 less 22% tax relief off the £252 (£55 tax saving)

£122 to pay

and 36 months to save up for it, put £3.50 PCM aside....

Can a council really force meters on PHV, it is an optional extra here, if fitted though it has to be tested by the council.

No, but they can stipulate which meters may go into a local PH if the owner chooses to have a meter.

If the council licence the PHV's, surely they have the power to force meters on PHV.

Maybe the council are bringing these meters in because the drivers are adding extras thier not entitled to

And the way to beat time controlled meters....... multi drop after midnight stop the meter and clear it when the first punter gets out restart as a new job and keep doing this till you get to the final drop. 3 drops 3 jobs! That's how some of them do it here

But, one of them will be sober enough to spot that! [Maybe even the driver! ]

Why do you think that, the council doesnt set PH rates your company does, and i cant see how a council can dictate meter fitting when they have no control of the fares.
