Dad braves crunch to start taxi business

A Leyland taxi driver has decided to go at it alone and launch a new taxi firm in the town - and insists there's enough business to go round. Chris Swarbrick has been driving cabs in Leyland for the last decade and is now branching out and starting his own firm, Premier Taxis.

However rivals have warned the Leyland dad, of Westfield Drive, that he'll have a battle on his hands because of the economy. Speaking about his new enterprise, Chris said: "I have been working as a taxi driver across Leyland and the surrounding area for more than 10 years now, but I've never had the time or inclination to start up my own business.

"I've decided to give it ago and I know it is a risk because of the economy, but I think there is enough business to go around." Chris has already enlisted the help of his partner Mandy Bright and his friend who has agreed to drive for him, and his family have been getting in on the act too by hand delivering flyers advertising his business.

He added: "There are two big taxi firms in Leyland at the moment, but I have set competitive prices and I will also be covering Lostock Hall and Penwortham.

"I have already invested £30,000 in Premier Taxis and I have three cars on the road. I'm looking to expand and eventually have a fleet of 12 to 15 cars. Once the business takes off we'll also be looking for an office, but at the minute I am running the business from home."

Chris said he believes it will take two to three months to get well established in the town, but already has a contract to provide taxis for Lancashire County Council.

Premier Taxis can be contacted on 01772 909415.
