A taxi driver, who drove his cab while under the influence of heroin twice within a matter of days was told he was fortunate not to going to prison when he appeared before sheriff Alistair duff at Dundee today.

Gorzier lyttle had previously admitted driving his taxi on various roads in Dundee on Feb 1 while under the influence of heroin. He further admitted driving in dock street on Feb 9 while under the influence of heroin

The court was told that on Feb 1,lyttle was driving his taxi when another taxi driver behind him noticed him driving erratically then collided with a parked car.

Lyttle was stopped by police, but no trace of alcohol was found. He was taken to police HQ where a police doctor examined him and declared him to be unfit to drive because of drugs.

On feb 9, police had followed lyttle from dock st to castle st where they pulled him over.

Again a breath test proved negative but this time lyttle told police officers about his heroin addiction and said he had injected the drug earlier that day.

Solicitor John Boyle said these two episodes had caused lyttle to seek help and he was now clear of heroin.

Sheriff Duff said "You were a lethal risk, not only to yourself and the public but to any passengers you may have had."

"This is a ridiculous situation, especially as you did it twice within a matter of days.

"I have weighed up carefully the options of alternatives to custody and have decided on balance, that i can give you non-custodial disposals in theses cases"

On the feb 1 case lyttle was ordered to perform 200 hours community service, and on the other case, he was placed on a restriction of liberty order for six months ,with a 7pm to 7am, curfew and banned from driven for 5 years.

I suppose we should be grateful he didn't kill anybody with his eractic driving which I'm sure continued between the 1st and 9th Feb. If he's an addict he would have had to inject every day.

I wonder if the passengers ever noticed his driving previously and if so why nobody ever said anything :?
