Nissan’s Leaf Could Make Ideal Electric Taxi August 3rd, 2009 Electric vehicles are becoming more popular. Their small size makes them ideal for small parking spots, crowded city streets, and their gasless engines make driving easier on the pocket. However so far, electric cars have remained solely as personal vehicles. With the announcement of Nissan’s new electric ‘Leaf” however all that could change. Previous electric vehicles were too small to be considered as commercial transportation such as taxis. They had limited space, and even more limited storage capacity. Nissan’s new all electric car named the Leaf is different. “Leaf” seats up to five persons comfortably and has a hatchback style body ideal for rear storage space. The vehicle, scheduled for wide release by 2012, with limited release in Japan and America next year, has a more than 100 mile range between charges. Additionally the Leaf, as an EV, would qualify for tax breaks set out for small electric vehicles. These features make it ideal for taxi companies. Leaf is a green and affordable option as an alternative to the gas guzzling taxis on the road now. The Leaf is expected to be priced competitively with Prius and Insight, and can be charge up to 80% of capacity within thirty minutes. With the increase in passenger space, and ideal charge time, the Leaf may just be the electric taxi of the future. Source; electric.co.uk |
