A Black Cab that has been Transformed into a Canal Boat is picking up Passenger in Litherland

Aug 6 2009

A black cab that was converted into a boat is now running along the Leeds to Liverpool canal.

People can now board the boat at one of its stops in Litherland, near the bridge.

The taxi has been flipped upside down and turned into a motorised boat as part of an arts project.

It is now open to the public and the vessel will operate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The taxi was modified by Dutch artist Lambert Kamps as part of the Art for Places project.

It is leading up to the unveiling of a moveable art commission that will be built on the canal from September.

The Hackney cab was donated by company Taxifit and was transformed by the artists with the help of a team of young people over the past two months.

Kamps is one of a number of artists who have been working in Seaforth, Litherland and Bootle to promote art within Housing Market Renewal areas.

The vessel is powered by an outboard motor and will operate throughout August transporting people up and down a section of the Leeds to Liverpool canal.

It will stop at five stops at Litherland Lift Bridge, Pennington Bridge, Carolina Wharf in Bootle, Sandhills and Eldonians.

Paul Kelly, Housing Market Renewal public realm manager, said: “Seeing the hackney cab come to life as a boat has been an amazing experience.

“It’ll be great to see it in action for the residents of the area and it should be a real landmark for the area.”

It was launched last Friday and marks the beginning of a five-week programme of activities on the South Sefton stretch of the canal.

Activities include weekday canoeing and kayaking sessions for local residents run by Merseysports.

They will run from the former St Winefride’s and St Richard’s School on Merton Road in Bootle.

Well at last they have found a good use for it.

Should be good for turning around if nothing else.
