Lack of taxi bays 'is causing congestion' in Sudbury

Image

No room ... Sudbury taxi driver Neville Todd who is among the drivers complaining about the parking situation.

SUDBURY'S taxi drivers claim they are being forced to drive around wasting petrol and increasing congestion because of a lack of spaces at the town's only rank.

Up to 22 private hire licences have been issued by Babergh District Council but there is currently only parking for seven cars at the East Street rank. At busy times, drivers queue up along the double yellow lines behind St Peter's Church, where motorists with disabled badges are also able to park.

But cabbies say they are being constantly moved on by traffic warden PCSO John Woodgate, leaving them no option but to drive around Sudbury's already clogged one-way system until a space becomes available.

Wish we had one of them, the Council and the wardens have been out today trying to snare us, they tried to ticket me while I was collecting for the Taxi driver in Cromford. I'm sure our licensing officer has got some psychotic grudge against taxi drivers, we told him there wasn't enough work to go round and there were to many plates, he said there's enough work for another 100 plates, they've not even had a survey and they are coming out with quotes like that.
