Drunk threatened taxi driver and stole his cab, court told

A drunk who threatened a taxi driver and drove away in his cab after taking his keys has escaped a jail sentence.
Adam McDaid, 22, told the driver he would "batter him" during the incident on the Wilton Estate, Batley, on May 26.

The father-of-one had been drinking with friends in Morley when he called a taxi to pick them up from the Ship Inn.

When they arrived at the Wilton Estate, prosecutor Ian Brook said the men became "aggressive and abusive", with McDaid grabbing the keys from the ignition and telling the driver: "Don't come near me or I'll batter you".

He drove off in the taxi but was stopped by police 10 minutes later, Leeds Crown Court heard. Handing McDaid a community order as an intensive alternative to custody, Mr Recorder Carl Gumsley said: "This was a vulnerable taxi driver and because you were in drink, you went far too far and did this ridiculous thing."

McDaid, of Stamford Street, Bradford, had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of blackmail and one count of driving with excess alcohol.

As well as the community order, McDaid must also complete a 12-month supervision order and 80 hours of unpaid work.

He has also been disqualified from driving for two years.
