Bouncers are being installed on Liverpool city centre taxi ranks to curb nighttime rowdiness

BOUNCERS are being installed on city centre taxi ranks to curb night-time rowdiness.

They will keep order in the ranks and enforce a queuing system for passengers.

Taxi drivers have welcomed the news, which comes after a pilot scheme last year.

City leaders say they are needed after a boom in the number of revellers hitting Liverpool’s streets after dark.

Licensed security staff and police will be on the streets every Friday and Saturday night, and Sunday nights before Bank Holiday Mondays, from 11pm to 4am.

The main hotspots being targeted are the Victoria Street, Dale Street and Eberle Street areas. One team of cab bouncers will be stationed there permanently.

Another team will roam the city patrolling other ranks. They are likely to go to either Bold Street – the busiest stand in the city – or North John Street, which has been highlighted as Liverpool’s most violent pick up point.

They will be backed up by a dedicated Police Community Support Officer.

The bouncers and back-up will cost up to £80,000 a year and the city is committing to it for two years.

It is being paid for through rises in taxi licence fees and with money from the city council’s coffers.

Feedback from the pilots in 2008 saw crime and disorder drop inside 250m zones around the patrolled sites.

The bouncers – who are all Security Industry Authority licence-holders – were first seen on the streets last weekend.

Former cabbie and Unite union representative Dave McLeod said: “It worked last time. I don’t see any reason why it won’t work this time. I’ve not seen any trouble.A lot of it’s to do with safety.”

TBH I've never seen any trouble over there in all the time I've been going over to collect customers. They have marshalls on the ranks at the weekend and at a cost of 80,000 I'm wondering how many they're employing.

Who exactly are the backup :? If it's the police then there is a cost there that surely will not be included in the £80,000. If it makes cabbies and revellers safe I suppose they should be applauded, but, I think they should be honest with the true cost of the operation

A very enlightened policy from an area not usually showing such an attribute.

And the drivers are playing they part by funding some of the cost. :shock:

Not sure I'd call it enlighted. I'm curious as to why they feel the need to employ these people. There are bouncers on nearly every pub and club in Liverpool at the weekends, there are marshalls on the ranks at the weekend and there is a larger police presence at the weekend. Perhaps they feel the need to employ more people at the weekend to throw their weight around on unsuspecting pi$$heads!! If it makes the cabbies safer then great but I think they may well annoy some punters before they get into the cab

If they are I wonder why an ex cab driver would support this?

Another micky mouse licence in my opinion obtained from more micky mouse training companies that provide NVQ's for drivers via Unite etc. I maybe cynical but I see a pattern forming

I like trees and I like training. Neither are provided by micky mouse training companies offering NVQ's :wink:
