Cabbie must pay £465 for continuing to drive while suspended

A taxi driver who continued to drive while suspended by Pembrokeshire County Council has been fined a total of £465.

David Mark Buckingham appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on October 19th.

The court heard how the 60 year-old from Milford Haven had continued to drive even though he had been suspended by the council’s licensing sub committee following a conviction for speeding.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s Public Protection Service took action against the driver with the co-operation of the taxi firm proprietor, who had not been told of the conviction when he applied for the job.

Mr Buckingham, who pleaded guilty, was ordered to pay a fine of £265, Costs of £185 and a £15 victim surcharge, totalling £465.

Magistrates told the court they viewed it as an extremely serious matter.

The chairman of the bench said that within days of his suspension the defendant had irresponsibly told untruths to get a job, putting the public at risk had there been an accident.

Rosalie Lilwall Licensing Committee Chair said, "This is a satisfying result from the court as he asked the local proprietor for a job only days after the Committee suspended him for driving at excessive speeds.

"Drivers are licensed to ensure that Pembrokeshire’s citizens are kept safe. Thanks must go to the taxi proprietor who gave evidence to our officers so that this case could be proceeded with."
