A HERO Scots soldier was stabbed to death yesterday as he tried to save a taxi driver.

Scots Guardsman Paul McGee - decorated for bravery in Iraq - died outside his mum's home as he tried to calm an argument between the cabbie and another driver.

A second man got out of the car and knifed hero Paul, 28, in front of horrified onlookers in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.

He died a year after winning the Queen's Commendation for Bravery for risking his life to rescue another soldier .

Last night, Paul's Commanding Officer described him as "a superb Guardsman and as brave as they come".

Lieutenant Colonel Lincoln Jopp MC added: "The whole of the Scots Guards family has been shocked by the tragic death of one of its heroes."

Last night, a family friend said: "They are just devastated. Paul had been working in recruitment for the army in Scotland and I think the family thought they could relax as he was safely away from danger abroad.

"Then this happened when he was visiting his mum for the weekend."

The friend, who did not wish to be named, said: "Paul was a really nice lad and from what I hear he was just trying to make sure the taxi driver. did not get hurt.

"He and his mother were travelling back from a race night in a taxi to her home in Lochwinnoch.

"On the way, the taxi driver. spotted a car in front which was being driven erratically. So the taxi driver. flashed his lights and eventually overtook this car.

"When the taxi dropped Paul and his mother at their house a man from this other car got out and started arguing with the taxi driver.

"Paul got out of the taxi to try and calm things down and another man left the other car and stabbed him.

"No one realised Paul had been stabbed at first. Apparently the people in the other car drove off.

Police have launched a probe into the "suspicious" death which happened around 1.30am.

Paul was commended for his bravery after risking his own life to save a drowning comrade in Iraq. A "Warrior" vehicle driven by his pal Stephen Ferguson plunged into a canal in 2007. Paul twice dived underwater to try to save his friend.

Tragically, Stephen, 31, lost his fight for life.

Yesterday, Lieutenant Colonel Jopp said: "The men of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards and the Regimental family join me in sending our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to Paul's mother Anne, his sister Kelly, and his family and friends in Lochwinnoch. We honour our fallen.

"He was doing vital work recruiting for the Scots Guards in Glasgow.

"He was showing that he had a real talent for the job and was an inspirational example to potential recruits."

Man held over death of army hero

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a soldier honoured for bravery in Iraq, police said.

Paul McGee, 28, died in hospital on Sunday after an incident in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire. Police said a 28-year-old man was being held in connection with his death.

Mr McGee, who served with the Scots Guards in Iraq, was found injured in the town's McConnell Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The soldier, who had been working to recruit youngsters into the Scots Guard, was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he died a short time later.

Mr McGee was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery in July 2008 after he reportedly risked his life trying to save comrade Stephen Ferguson while on a tour of duty in Iraq.

Guardsman Ferguson, 31, of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, originally from Lanarkshire, was travelling in a Warrior armoured vehicle on a routine patrol near Basra city in December 2007 when it slid into a canal while manoeuvring in the dark. Mr McGee and other soldiers freed him from the vehicle and gave first aid. He was flown back to the UK for medical treatment but later died from his injuries.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "A 28-year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with the death of 28-year-old Paul McGee.

"Paul, who was from the Lochwinnoch area of Renfrewshire, was found injured in McConnell Road, Lochwinnoch around 1.25am on Sunday. He was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital but died a short time later."

A post-mortem examination was being carried out as part of the inquiry into the young man's death, Strathclyde Police said. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal

Even better if he never gets there, justice in this case should be an eye for an eye.

No such place these days, they all wannna be the King of Wherever but don't have the skill to fight like a man should so they resort to using a blade, I bet he jabbed him while he was facing away from him as well, I took a coward like this out one time in a club, sneaky was gonna bottle someone until I arrived, once the green bottle was removed the brown bottle followed suit instantly afterwards.

BTW, I watched a program about the tragic case of Sarah Payne, abducted and killed by a paedo who should have been boiled alive, only to read this...

(who said the EU was good thing again?)

David Blunkett's ruling

On 24 November 2002, Home Secretary David Blunkett made a landmark ruling, ordering that Roy Whiting must serve a minimum of 50 years in prison. This would make him ineligible for parole until 2051, when he would be 92 years old.

Within 48 hours of the ruling being made, the European Court of Human Rights had ruled in favour of another convicted murderer (Anthony Anderson) who was challenging the right of politicians to decide how long a murderer must spend in prison before being considered for parole.

In June 2004, it was confirmed that Whiting would be applying to the Court of Appeal for a new minimum term to be set, although his appeal has yet to be heard.
