Brothers Jailed Over Axe Attack

Thursday, 29 October, 2009

Two brothers have been jailed over an axe attack on a taxi driver in the south west of Glasgow.

Colin Esnol, 26, and Christopher Esnol, 22, admitted assaulting Ian Pringle and stealing his private hire car in the city's Pollok area in April.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how the younger brother punched the driver before Colin Esnol hit him with an axe.

Christopher Esnol was jailed for 45 months. His brother was ordered to serve six years for the attack.

The court heard how the attack happened after the Esnol brothers and a third man were picked up by Mr Pringle.

After the driver escaped from the taxi Christopher Esnol drove the vehicle into parked cars in a nearby street.

As the Esnols and the third man tried to leave, another vehicle arrived and several men got out and started fighting with them.

'Terrifying ordeal'

Christopher Esnol was attacked and later treated in Glasgow's Southern General Hospital for a fractured skull.

Mr Pringle was taken to the Royal Alexandria Hospital, in Paisley, and underwent an operation on his right hand. He suffered nerve damage and will be permanently scarred.

Jailing the Esnols for the attack, Lord Brailsford told the older brother: "This incident must have been terrifying for the unfortunate driver."

He ordered that Colin Esnol, who has previous convictions for violent crime and carrying weapons, should only begin serving his latest jail term after completing 150 days in prison outstanding from a previous sentence.

The judge jailed the younger brother for 45 months after pointing out: "Your record is not remotely as bad as that of your brother."
