Burnley Taxi Driver Fined For Illegal Pick-up

28 October 2009

A private hire taxi driver has been ordered to pay £600 for illegally trying to pick up a passenger in Manchester city centre.

Esrar Jabar (26), of Burnley, admitted illegally plying for hire and driving with no insurance during a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court.

Jabar, who works for Manchester Cars private hire firm, was fined £200 for each offence along with £200 costs, and had six points added to his driving licence, following the Manchester City Council prosecution.

Council licensing officers spotted Jabar pull up in front of a man outside Yates's in Portland Street in the early hours of Sunday, May 31st.

The man asked to be taken to Wigan and Jabar, who the officers had spoken to earlier that night for not displaying private hire stickers, let him into his car and drove off.

The officers later went to Manchester Cars' office in Bloom Street, looked at Jabar's log sheets for that weekend, and saw the job had not been booked through the base.

Coun. Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council's Executive member for the environment, said: "Anyone who visits the city centre, especially during nights out, should be aware the driver and vehicle are not insured if they hail a private hire car on the street.

"We are doing everything we can to crack down on unscrupulous drivers who try to make extra money with no regard for their passengers' safety and have regular patrols looking out for drivers who break the rules."
