Carry On Cabbie and you'll get a parking ticket!

Congregating cabbies who hog restricted parking spaces in Leighton town centre face being fined without warning.

The move follows complaints to Leighton-Linslade Town Council about taxis waiting in spaces reserved for vehicles delivering to shops and businesses.

People eating at tables outside the town's ASK restaurant have also said they dislike dining while being surrounded by cabs "belching out fumes".

Councillor Roy Johnstone, who sits on the Leighton-Linslade town centres management committee said he was one of those affected while enjoying "a lovely Italian Saturday lunch" at the Market Square bistro.

He told a committee meeting last Thursday: "There are just too many cabs on the road – people are being choked by the fumes.

"I have even seen them laying up on residential roads waiting for a call.

"It's time something was done about it."

Suggestions to alleviate the problem include an extra taxi rank in Church Square, but that was given the thumbs down because it would mean a reduction in parking for shoppers and people using the General Post Office.

Committee chairman, Councillor Ken Sharer, said he had received several emails from people complaining about illegally parked cabs and had written to Central Beds Council's highways department to ask about the possibility of providing a further taxi rank.

He said: "I was told there were no funds available, but they would look into it."

Councillor Johnstone said the only logical space was outside the multi-storey car park next to the walkway leading to the High Street.

In the meantime, it's a case of Carry On Cabbie and you'll get a parking ticket!

The Citizen contacted a number of Leighton taxi firms, but none was able to comment before our press deadline.

>> Are the taxis a menace, or are they just trying their best to earn a living? We'd love to hear your views. Send us an email to news@lbobserver.co.uk
