Victory over wardens for cabbies

http://www.expressandstar.com/2009/11/0 ... r-cabbies/

Victory has been granted to cabbies in Walsall in their battle with traffic wardens.

The wardens will be told by Walsall Council to allow the drivers 10 minutes to leave their cars for essential errands, following talks

Negotiations between the chairman of the Hackney Carriage Association (HCA) and officers and the leader of the council were “very fruitful” in resolving the dispute.

The talks were held as a result of a drivers’ strike on the night of November 24, which left many town revellers stranded.

A dispute erupted over the alleged treatment of drivers by traffic wardens, as the cabbies were given parking tickets for leaving their taxis unattended when they went to the toilet or to buy a cup of coffee.

One driver claimed a warden used a ruler to see if his back tyre was inside or outside the end of the taxi rank before ordering him to circle the town until there was more space.

But chairman of the HCA Mirza Khalid said: “If they stick to it, then this is a good outcome, but we will see if there are any tickets received. They were blaming a lack of communication.”

He added that drivers will also be allowed to pay for their licences by credit card, a facility which should have been in place last November.

A good move, and nice to see another council follow on from the sound lead taken by my council, which following complaints from the likes of me allows 15 minutes. :D
