Unlicensed Newport cabbies caught plying for trade

EIGHT "taxi" drivers were caught illegally plying for hire in unlicensed vehicles in Newport.

The drivers were caught during an investigation carried out by Newport City Council Licensing Team and Gwent Police earlier this month.

This latest operation followed the successful Newport council prosecution on December 1 of Mohammed Rahman, of Duckpool Road, who was caught illegally plying for hire in the city centre in February 2009.

Rahman was found guilty by Cwmbran magistrates who ordered him to pay a fine of £250 and a contribution towards council costs of £500.

A further seven council prosecutions, following a similar joint operation in June, are due in court shortly.

Only council-licensed Hackney Carriage black taxis may lawfully pick up passengers in the street without the journey being booked in advance.

Newport’s Private Hire cabs must display triangular door stickers to identify them as licensed vehicles for private hire purposes.

Drivers who illegally ply for hire are not insured to carry passengers, which is another separate offence.

Gwent residents can text CAB to 83222 to get access to local licensed taxi information
