FESTIVE party-goers are being given a helping hand to ensure they get home safely.

Stewards will be on duty at main taxi ranks in Blackpool town centre over Christmas and New Year.

They will be stationed in Talbot Square outside the Counting House pub and outside the Royal Bank of Scotland between 1am and 4am from tomorrow until Christmas Eve, and also on New Year's Eve.

Coun Tony Williams, chairman of community safety partnership BSafe Blackpool, said: "Blackpool is very busy at night at this time of year and this scheme gives people the peace of mind and reassurance of dedicated security when queuing for a taxi home.

"Boisterous behaviour can lead to scuffles at taxi ranks, which are harmless but can spoil a person's night.

"I am pleased they will be back to watch over partygoers so everyone will have a safe and fun time."

The stewards are being provided by Northern Security.

Bill Lewtas, of Blackpool Licensed Taxi Association, said his members welcomed the initiative. He added: "The taxi marshalls do a great job in very difficult conditions. They enable people to queue at busy times and help keep order by stopping queue jumpers.

"However we would also like to see railings put back on the taxi rank in Talbot Square. When we had the old Fountain rank in the middle of the square, there were railings and we feel if these were put back where the new rank is, that would make the work of the marshalls more effective."
