Cab driver accused of robbing passenger


A TAXI driver has been arrested after he was accused of beating up a passenger who had been sick in his cab.

It is also alleged that the 43-year-old cabbie robbed his passenger of cash when the man refused to hand over money to pay for the vehicle to be cleaned.

The bizarre incident is said to have happened after the driver collected a fare in Paisley town centre shortly before 3am.

During a two-mile trip to the Gallowhill area of the town, the passenger was sick in the vehicle.

Moments later, the cabbie stopped near the Arkleston Court high flats in Gallowhill, where a row erupted over the cost of cleaning up the mess.

The 47-year-old passenger was left nursing bruising to his face but it is understood he did not need hospital treatment.

One source told the Paisley Daily Express: “The cab driver had picked up a passenger in the town centre and everything seemed normal but then the guy threw up and made quite a mess.

“In those circumstances, it would be only natural for a taxi driver to be upset.

“It’s kind of an unwritten rule that, if you are sick in a taxi, you offer to give the cabbie some money to pay for the mess to be cleaned up.

“I’m told that, in this case, the passenger either wasn’t willing or wasn’t able to give the driver money.”

Residents in Gallowhill have told of being woken up by the sound of a disturbance outside their homes in the early hours of Sunday morning.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard a scuffle and, when I looked outside, I could see two men arguing.

“At first, I wasn’t sure what was going on but I later heard that a man had been beaten up and was left in quite a bit of pain.”

Yesterday, a police spokesman confirmed an investigation is under way.

He added: “There was an incident in the Gallowhill area of Paisley in the early hours of Sunday morning and, during that incident, a taxi passenger suffered injuries.

“Our inquiries into this matter are continuing. A man has been questioned by officers and is expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court in the near future.”

I would have taken photos of the mess on my mobile phone. I would have helped him to his address and made sure he got in safely. I would then have finished for the night. In the morning I would have written out a bill for the clean up and delivered it to the guy giving him 7 days to pay the bill. At the end of 7 days if the bill was not paid I would make a claim through the county court for the full amount plus the court costs. Assuming that he did not reply to the court papers, I would win by default and then I would send in the baliffs to claim property to the value of the claim.

The one time this happened to me many years ago, the guy wouldn't pay the soilage charge & wanted to fight me but was hardly able to stand.

So I shouted at him to get out of the cab & take his jacket off & I was going to see to him.

We both got out, he took his jacket off, I grabbed it off him & proceeded to clean the vomit with his very expensive jacket, while he swayed about & when I had finished & pushed his vomit covered jacket straight into his face.

He fell over, I drove off.

Not the best result, but highly satisfying!!

Magic Mr Grandad, but you forgot one thing.

Collect a sample of vomit for DNA testing in case he denies the charge in the Small Claims Court, because if he does it is your word against his.
