Oldbury youth sent down after threatening to kill cabbie
A 17-year-old Oldbury youth who left a taxi driver in "fear of his life" when he robbed him at knifepoint has been given a 12 month Detention and Training Order.
Judge Michael Dudley told the teenager who cannot be named for legal reasons taxi drivers were "vulnerable to attack" and they had to be protected by the courts.
He said the teenager had a "bad" criminal record having committed another robbery offence just four months earlier when he had been allowed to keep his freedom.
"This taxi driver is now worried about going out to earn a living because of you," said the Judge who warned the youth: "You have got to learn that if you carry on doing things like this the sentences are going to get longer and longer."
The youth who admitted robbery robbed the taxi driver of his jacket and wallet containing £50 after telling him: "If you move I will kill you."
He was in possession at the time, said Mrs Kanwal Juss prosecuting, of a knife with a 12" blade which he pointed at the terrified driver.
After the robbery the police were notified and after arresting the teenager who lived nearby they searched his home and found two small bags containing cannabis for personal use.
Miss Blondelle Thompson defending the youth who further admitted possessing an offensive weapon and the cannabis told Wolverhampton Crown Court he was "ashamed and remorseful."
She said the youth had been carrying the knife for protection having been stabbed in an earlier incident.
