Taxi driver appeal as man fights for life after night out in Liverpool

Mar 20 2010 by Ben Rossington, Liverpool Echo

A man was fighting for his life today after being admitted to hospital in Liverpool with serious head injuries.

The 29-year-old, believed to be Irish and on a visit to the city, was dropped off at the Royal by a taxi at about 11.40pm yesterday.

Hospital staff informed detectives because of the seriousness of the man's injuries. He was in a critical condition today.

Because officers are unable to speak to the victim they are desperate to speak to anyone who knows him or knows how he was injured.

They particularly want to trace the black Hackney cab driver who dropped him off. At this stage, police say his injuries are consistent with a fall.

He is white, around 6ft 1ins tall, of medium/muscular build and clean-shaven with short fair hair. He was wearing a grey T-shirt with a long-sleeved sweater and a distinctive blue T-shirt over the top which read 'Stag 2010'.

Det Insp Paul Mann, leading the investigation, said: "The victim is critical in hospital with serious head injuries.

"Because of this, we have not been able to speak to him to him to find out what happened.

"It is vital we speak to anyone who came into contact with him on Friday night.

"The taxi driver who kindly took him to hospital is potentially an important witness and could play a big part in helping piece together what happened.

"I would appeal for him to contact police."

Anyone with information should contact St Anne St CID on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
