Found this osted on the fannie forum by Star 75 I went to Dublin this weekend for the six nations game , and when we arrived at Dublin airport we were unable to get a taxi into town as they were all on strike from noon until 4pm !!! This is something they are doing again on Monday , Wednesday , Friday and Saturday this week . Later found out that they are striking because they want the trade regulated again , they say ever since it was de regulated the trade has been ruined. Its a pity Jim and Gary dont post on here anymore as this must prove to them that their precious Dublin model is a total failure for the taxi trade and if they still think its a good idea they should get themselves over to Dublin and ask the guys over there just how bad things really are for the Dublin taxi drivers. Thee things Star 75. First, we don't need to post on the fannie forum. REal debate takes place here. I answer your point here as a courtesy because you are clearly bewildered and need some clarity which the fannie forum no longer provides. Second, the Dublin de-restriction was a cock-up of mega proportions. The reason it may be felt to be failing is because Dublin opened the door to everyone. There were no quality controls in place so every man and his dog could get a licence. An exercise in crass stupidity. This can't happen here, even with the quality controls that currently exist. And we have always articulated that there should be greater controls put in place here. This would maintain an equilibrium while allowing those who want to the same freedoms as enjoyed by the current clique controlling their own vested interests. Third, another exercise in stupidity is for Irish cabbies to strike. All they will gain is loss of earnings, which they already claim are hard to come by. Dearie me. The genie is out of the bottle. Even if the strike achieved no more licences, this wouldn't help the situation, there would still be an alleged oversupply. Dublin's solution is to institute real quality controls, and make it mandatory for all existing licence holders to comply with them in a reasonable timeframe, possibly two years. No compliance, no licence. Numbers would drop. Result achieved. Clearly the problem with the cab trade is that it is controlled by cabbies, on your showing Star 75 obviously not up to the job. |

If you want to reduce numbers fast, the inland revenue should be insisting that the owner of the vehicles that rents them out or requires a driver on a split bag, pays that driver the min wage How many owners could pay the drivers????, that goes for owners nationwide of hack and PH |

How many owners could pay the drivers????, that goes for owners nationwide of hack and PH so would that include the NI conts , sick pay , holiday pay and we can't forget the pension rights as well skippy !!!!! |

How many owners could pay the drivers????, that goes for owners nationwide of hack and PH Yeah but the keyword here is owner not employer. The driver is under no obligation to hire. Apart of course from the simple truth that the breach of his human rights denies him access to the tools of his trade unless he does. However, HMRC could insist that licences are returned to the cab office while no reasonable tax returns are being made. |
