Taxi drivers ignoring safety warnings on dangerous vehicles POLICE say taxi drivers are continuing to use dangerous cars on Coventry roads despite warnings. The criticism comes after a police operation to test taxi safety revealed more than 80 per cent of the vehicles tested had defects. Since city officers began regularly testing taxis three years ago, police say 349 out of 796 have had defects. This time defective tyres, steering and brakes were among the flaws found on the vehicles. PC Dean Wainwright, of Stoney Stanton Road police, led the operation. He said: “It is frustrating that this operation has been running since January 2007 and the amount of defective vehicles is not reducing. Police motorcyclists trawled the streets to bring Hackney Carriages and private hire vehicles to a test station on Foleshill Road. Once on site, the drivers were interviewed by police, taxi licensing staff and a benefit investigation team. While this was being done the vehicles underwent a rigorous examination by the Vehicle, Operators and Services Agency (VOSA) to ensure the taxis were roadworthy. During the operation 24 vehicles and drivers were examined and interviewed. Of those, eight were taken off the road immediately as they were considered “too dangerous”. A further six were given ‘delayed prohibitions’, which means they could be driven away but must be fixed in a certain time period but must not be used as taxis until the fault is fixed. Another six were given suspension notices for minor faults. Five endorsable fixed penalties were given out, which carry a £60 fine and three penalty points on the drivers licence. source: http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/ |
