Pubs and private hire taxi firms operating outside of the law have been targeted during a series of licensing operations in Kirklees. On Friday 19th March, the Dewsbury Socialist Club on Bradford Road was found to be in breach of their club certificate due to membership issues. A meeting will now take place with their committee to ensure they are operating fully within the law. Elsewhere, complaints have been received about the Ring 'O' Bells pub on Westgate in Cleckheaton. These related to under age drinking and associated anti social behaviour. Two mystery shoppers attended the pub to observe and a licensed visit was then carried out by uniformed officers. Out of thirteen customers within the pub, ten were under age. Papers will now be submitted for a full review within the next month before Kirklees Licensing Committee. Kirklees Police Licensing Officer Sergeant John McFadzean said: “Working Men’s Clubs in particular need to be aware of their licensing certificates and what that authorises them to do. “We are here to support any licensed premises that require help but any that blatantly flout the law will be dealt with accordingly. “Some may think there is no great harm in young people having a drink, however; we have responded to various complaints about those who are drinking and how they are blighting the lives of residents through anti social behaviour. “Kirklees Police Licensing is committed to helping premises to be run correctly and to provide a valuable service to the community, but when they become a focal point for anti-social behaviour or criminal activity we will take whatever action is necessary. “Further operations are planned throughout Kirklees over the next few weeks.” On Friday (19/03) officers from Kirklees Council Licensing and West Yorkshire Police also undertook an operation aimed at Private Hire vehicles plying for hire and trading illegally. When approached by private hire vehicles, officers got in and travelled to a pre arranged location. The drivers were then dealt with by Licensing Officers and uniform police staff. As a result, five private hire drivers will face further action. One of the vehicles was taken off the road immediately as it was not in a roadworthy condition and was not safe. A further six drivers were dealt with by way of Fixed Penalty Notices for various road traffic offences. Sergeant McFadzean added: 'It is illegal for private hire vehicles to pick up fares that are not pre-booked and it should be remembered by anyone who does get into a vehicle that if it is not pre-booked then it is not insured. “This operation also looked at how roadworthy the vehicles were, as we not only want the customer to get in a bona fide vehicle that is insured but one which is also safe to be on the road. "Kirklees Council Licensing has worked closely with the Police to carry out these operations and we are happy to support them in ensuring that the drivers are licensed, the vehicles are safe and they operate within the law.” http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/sect ... 2&iid=9628 |
