Post subject:  Edinburgh's taxi barons deliver a tariff Christmas cracker .

Special Christmas and New Year Tariff time to be reduced by one day and 4 hours each.

Tariff DECREASED for 26th December and 2nd January

Trade representatives have crafted a real Tariff cracker which the committee is going to consider tomorrow.

We can "thank" the following for this:-

Les McVey - City Cabs
Bill Purnell - Central Radio Taxis
John Cumming - ComCab
Derek Bridgeford - Scottish Taxi Federation (CC committee member)
Eddie Wood - Airport Taxi Drivers Association

Recommendation (likely to be adopted by committee)

NORMAL TARIFF

30p increase in day shift drop of the flag.
10p increase in night shift drop of the flag.
No increase in rate or reduction in yardage.

On the proposal for a "Party Tariff" Bill Purnell states "We would also like to investigate a "Party Tariff" from midnight Friday to 6 am Saturday and from midnight Saturday to 6 am Sunday. We believe this would encourage drivers to stay out to service the busy time"

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR Tariff

Bill McVey, agreeing with Bill Purnell on the normal tariff added, "I would ask that the committee look at curtailing tariff 3 and 4 periods to 10 pm Christmas Eve to 6 am on the 26th and 10 pm on Hogmanay to 6 am on the 2nd January.

I understand that this is also likely to be recommended by the council solicitor.

Recommendation (unlikely to be adopted by committee)

AIRPORT TARIFF Increase

The council solicitor is recommending that NO increase to the tariff be made at this time for airport pickups. He is proposing that consultations be made with BAA in respect of this.

(Note:- The charges made by BAA and passed on to drivers are not recoverable at this time or as a result of this review.)

FACTS

The council solicitor's report outlines the following facts used in the determination of these matters.

Average Average
Contract job Cash Job

CRT £9.54p £8.00p
CC £9.54p £.60p

(Note:- Curious that both companies have the same Ave. Contract job value. Figures are genuine?)

The cost of operating a taxi is deemed to have increased from £41,897 to £43,487, an increase of 3.8%.

The proposed tariff increase is 1.1% on a 4 mile journey.

COMMENT

1. We don't need an increase in these recessionary times. This will prove a disincentive for customers who will seek cheaper and readily available alternatives.

2. The proposed increase is derisory. It does not even cover costs.

3. We will be saddled with this Tariff review until the next scheduled one if it is adopted at this time.

4. We could be saddled with an inadequate tariff for a protracted period and the prospect of having toincreae the tariff by an unprecedented level to reestablish the balance next time, with a detrimental effect on business.

5. The need for a PartyTariff to encourage drivers to stay out, as Bill Purnell states, proves that demand is not being met. So, why are City and Central objecting to licences which would meet the demand they admit is not being met?

6. Who asked for these trade barons to reduce the Christmas and New year tariff? Anyone want this at this time?

7. This proves that the trade in general is woefully represented and that drivers are not properly consulted on these important changes to their working conditions? This vice like grip the trade barons have on our trade is now costing us real cash.

The 30p and 10p rises to the start price are fine,

I would have increaced the daytime start price by more as it is far too low nowadays, although I would not have even bothered changing the nightime start price.

The xmas and new year tariffs DO go on for to long,

Having the extras still on from the 2nd of jan into the 3rd only scares passengers away.

Because so many passengers are scared off, even though the extras are on, you end up taking no more than normal!

gary,

If you are trying to point out that the increace is small,

That's right.

But as you don't want any increace, you will surely be happy that it is so small.

What are your waiting time rates on the standard day & night tariffs?

And I note that many of the instigators are radio firms & f*ck the non-radio, rank cabbie!

We're having the same problem with radio firms in Brum.

Frank, I thought an increase in tariff is supposed to equate to an increase in earnings? Had that rise gone through, we would have ended up worse off as a result. With only an increase on the hire charge, and no increase in yardage, the ever rising fuel costs would have nullified any potential earnings. You've got to cover the increased cost of doing the job just to make the Hire Charge work to your benefit. And that's supposing your customers remain using your services. The bad press would have killed us.

Oh and the PH, would have had a field day with our tariff increase. They are fighting us on price by reducing their tariff while we want to increase our tariff. What the feck are you guys thinking?

We've had a lucky escape, no doubt about it.

I'd be interested in finding out how these clowns came up with their proposed tariff increase. I can't work out the logic behind it.

How about you Frank, perhaps you can postulate their reasoning behind a 30p increase in the day shift drop of the flag, 10p increase in the night shift drop of the flag, and no increase in rate or a reduction in the yardage?

Gary,

Personally, I think the starting prices are a bit out, and I would have been happy with the changes.
When applied to short fares, the dayshift start price is a bit too low and the nightshift just a tiny bit too high. It doesnt matter too much with longer fares.
I think the start prices should be £2 and £2.50.
