Taxi driver claimed £9,000 in benefits

Published Date: 29 March 2010

A man illegally claimed almost £9,000 in benefits while working as a taxi driver.

Paul Hawes, 46, of Ferguson Road, Marton, admitted two offences of failing to notify a change in circumstances.

He was sentenced to do 150 hours unpaid work for the community by Blackpool magistrates.

Hawes illegally claimed £8,634 in housing and council tax benefits between October 2007 and July last year.

He told magistrates: "I had to do something to clear the rent and debts off. I did it out of desperation."

Make no mistake he will have to pay that back as well, maybe a charge on any property he has. But it will be the county court that deals with that.

Panic not.
