Newcastle Airport drop-off zone to be axed A FREE drop-off zone for passengers outside the entrance to Newcastle Airport is to be axed. Instead, a new express car park will be created at the front of the airport, in place of the existing pick-up and drop-off area, with a charge of £1 for the first 20 minutes. People wanting to avoid being charged will now have to use a new designated car park that bosses say is a three-minute walk from the terminal. Parking there will be free for an extended time of 15 minutes instead of the current five minutes and will open later this month. The move comes nearly two years after the airport slashed free drop-off times from 10 minutes to five minutes, which angered local taxi drivers. Now once again they claim taxi drivers and passengers are being hit in the pocket by airport chiefs. Bob Sneddon of the North Tyneside hackney Carriage Association said: “This is going to make things even harder for taxi drivers and ultimately more expensive for passengers. “If they want dropping off outside, then we have the right to charge them for any costs. “It will also cost us more in time. When we are picking up a fare it will not be just three minutes there, but three minutes back, and that is after we have located the passenger. “Once again there has been no consultation with us over these changes – the airport just does what it likes.” Upon request, passengers with reduced mobility will be provided with assistance to the terminal building from the free parking zone, express car park or short stay car park. The airport has invested £300,000 in the new express facility, providing a ticketless entry system, using automated number plate recognition technology and Tyne Tunnel-style coin-drops at exit barriers in order to improve traffic flows. A spokeswoman for Newcastle International Airport said: “The 15-minute free period provides the airport’s customers with one of the most generous free parking periods available at any UK airport. “From April 26, the free parking period for picking up and dropping off passengers will be increased from five to 15 minutes, in a dedicated parking area just three minutes’ walk from the terminal building. “In addition, a designated taxi pick-up and set-down area will be provided within the new 15-minute free parking zone.” http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/ |

Brum Airport has this system now & it works very well. No more PH waiting for 'booked fares'
Now they wait outside the airport until their passengers phone them to say they are ready to be picked up. And the private cars that previosly waited & clogged up the road system do the same & the roads are now free for public transport to use without delays. And it's freed up the police that were constantly having to move these vehicles on. |

yes but every inch of space on bus stops roundabout slips etc etc on the approach to brumport are usually clogged with the waiting cars ! quite a lot still use the short stay at the railway station and the maglev although there is supposed to be a 20 minute limit there I've yet to see it being enforced but i'm told it is occassionally at least at luton you can sit in the long stay for half an hour for free whilst waiting to pull round |

Anyone used the new drop off parking yet? and just how far away from the Terminal Building is it....or is it best just to bite the bullet and pay a quid to drop off where the free drop off used to be? |

I use it twice a week its the same car park, but instead of getting a ticket on the way in just drive up to the barrier and it opens, then you bung a quid in a bin on the way out. My fare has said they will now meet me at the shell garage as its only 50 yards further |
