Colne man jumped on taxi bonnet and punched driver

A CABBIE attacked in a row over a fare was left physically sick and worried it might happen again, a court was told.

Mohammed Wasim suffered a bust lip after passenger Gareth Lowerson (42) got out, jumped on the taxi bonnet, threatened to smash his windscreen and then hit him in the face.

Police arrived and the defendant told officers: "Yes, I hit him," Penine magistrates heard.

Lowerson, of Hawley Street, Colne, said to have Parkinson's Disease and to be a recovering drug addict on methadone, admitted assault by beating and was bailed for a pre-sentence report.

Mr Alex Mann (prosecuting) said there was no suggestion the defendant was drunk. He and the victim had a disagreement over whether the fare should be £2 or £3. Mr Wasim had helped Lowerson with his shopping bags, but as he got out of the cab, he jumped on the bonnet, started punching the windscreen, rolled off at the driver's side of the car and was shouting and swearing at the victim.

Mrs Mann said Mr Wasim was then assaulted and his lip ended up swollen. The beating was seen by several members of the public.

The defendant had served a four-year jail term but had not been in trouble since. His record was mainly for dishonesty and drugs offences.
