Taxi refuses to take woman home with alcohol

A taxi driver told a woman passenger he couldn't take her home with her shopping because carrying alcohol was against his religion. Shopper Helen Russell, who was laden with bags of groceries, was left waiting until another car arrived.

The 49-year-old had been shopping in Sainsbury's in Oxford city centre and had asked to be dropped off at a friend's house. However, when the Royal Cars driver arrived he refused to take her.

"He said, 'I'm sorry, I can't take you because it's against my religion'. He was looking at the alcohol," she said. "I thought what difference does it make if I've got alcohol?' I just couldn't believe it. I'm a regular customer and never have I had this before.

"A lot of people I've spoken to about this say people shouldn't use religion as an excuse for anything. This country is going to pot. It's all about religion. "How can society allow this to happen? I just can't accept it."

The Roman Catholic added that she did not know what religion the taxi driver belonged to.

Niaz Mohammed, manager of Royal Cars, apologised and said that it would not happen again. "He is one of the new drivers. I think it was his first or second day and he didn't realise that he had to pick up shoppers that carry alcohol, but he will do in future," he said.

He added that it was not his company's policy to refuse lifts because customers were carrying alcohol - and that had been made clear to the driver. A second Royal Cars taxi picked Mrs Russell up instead and took her to her destination.

Maybe the Asian community should stop selling alcohol in there shops if they feel like this. Somehow i do not see that happening

I think everyone in the trade should bin their prejudices when they are working.

Punters just want to go from a to b, if you don't want to do that without upsetting them, then go fill the shelves at Asda.

And really....how could the driver not "realise"? Has this bloke been living in a cave for years and only just arrived here? Hang on a minute...what was his name again?!

can anyone explain to me what religion has to do with british licensing laws ?if she came staggering out a pub on a sat night would he refuse to pick her up because she had alcohol in her system ?,when this individual applied for his license he would have signed a form agreeing to the conditions,if you dont obey the conditions you dont have a license how hard is that to understand ?

And maybe the Asian community should stop selling drugs.

There really are massive distinctions between Asian & Muslim.

Within Asians there are Sikhs & Hindus amongst others & Sikhs drink BIG TIME. If you ever get invited to a Sikh wedding, accept the invitation & go. I did once; never seen so much booze distributed on tables.

But the Muslim faith has a NO ALCOHOL content!!

Invariably, the Sikhs & Hindus are poles-apart from Muslims & there is no love lost at all between the two 'Indian faiths' & Muslims.

And as this was a woman that the first driver refused to carry, 'female subservience', another trait practiced by Asians, may have contributed to the refusal.

Complicated thinking . . . but that's how some people are.
