Wheelie bin relief for Morden cabbie? 6:40am Saturday 22nd May 2010 Morden cabbie Adam Sparkes is likely to be one of the first residents pleading for a wheelie bin from Merton Council. Foxes feasting on litter strewn across Cardinal Avenue are believed to have started gnawing underneath cars, and last week are thought to be responsible for cutting through the brake cables of his cab. Unable to stop, he said he narrowly avoided two children while reversing from his driveway, and incredibly it is the fifth time animals have caused damage to his vehicle. After losing more than £3,000 in earnings and repair bills while his cab was off the road over the last year, the 37-year-old said: ”I’m now refusing to pay my council tax until the authority does something about the problem. “This is an enormous health and safety issue and I’m not the first person around here who this has happened to.” In November van driver Tony Elcome, of nearby Lower Morden Lane, careered off the road and slammed into a lamppost after losing control of his vehicle for the same reason. But Merton Council director of environment and regeneration Chris Lee said: “We sympathise with any problems residents are experiencing with foxes. However, in line with other London councils, our policy is not to cull them as such action has proved to be an ineffective measure. “Foxes are attracted by food waste, so to deter them we always recommend ensuring any rubbish waiting for collection is properly contained. Anyone believing their brake cables have been disturbed by foxes can approach a private pest control company for advice.” Source; yourlocalguardian.co.uk |
