Taxi drivers get a free MOT to keep healthy

IN a bid to prevent Swindon cabbies developing long-term health problems, NHS Swindon and Swindon Council are offering free health MOTs to all Swindon taxi drivers. Taxi drivers are invited to Swindon’s County ground on June 23 from 10am to 3pm for a free health check. During the health checks, taxi drivers can be tested for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and told if they are at-risk of developing diabetes.

They will also have their Body Mass Index (BMI) identified as many long-term health problems are associated with being obese or overweight. The specialist stop smoking service will also be present, giving advice and information about how to quit smoking. Councillor Brian Mattock, Cabinet Member for Housing, Community and Partnerships, said: “Inequalities in health amongst residents in Swindon can be attributed to such lifestyle habits as smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise. “Sickness and ill health can often prevent taxi drivers from working and if they don't work, they don't earn money. “The long working hours and nature of their work means they can be inactive for much of the day. “However, simple changes in lifestyle can often mean big differences to health, fitness and well being.”
