Brighton and Hove taxi fares set to rise Sunday 27th June 2010 Rising fuel prices and insurance costs have forced cab drivers to ask for an increase in their fares for the first time in three years. Hackney carriage drivers have asked Brighton and Hove City Council to consider a raft of changes to their tariffs. The proposed rise adds about 60p on a three-mile city centre journey - up from £6.80 to £7.40 - which will be used to cover increased running costs. Alterations to the tariffs have been discussed by the council's licensing committee. The proposals are to increase initial fares for all tariffs by 20p. This sees the day time tariff increase from £2.40 to £2.60. An extra 20p will then be added onto the fare for every additional 160 yards. This compares to 176 yards under the old system. The fares will increase by 50% on top of that for vehicles carrying five to eight passengers. In May 2002, Brighton and Hove ranked third in the country for fares. It is now ranked 61st nationally, the lowest it has ever been. A council spokeswoman confirmed the proposal would be advertised to give people a chance to comment or making any objections. If objections are received, it will return to the committee to make a final decision. Source; theargus.co.uk |

The PHM list is great, if you are at the bottom, trying to convince councillors to up the fares, but it works in reverse to those at the top. Also it doesn't help having a load of idiots driving cabs in B&H.

I will write and place an objection... stating that the fares are too high at present.... and if they go up anymore... it will strongly have a bearing on whether or not I decide to go to Brighton this year.... and spend my pennies in the local restaurants and hotels...ps. the on-street parking charges are horrendous.... |

Just everything is horrendously expensive in B&H, especially rents. I payed for a run-down sh...thole an average 400 pounds a month, whereas I took an average of 5 pounds per fare. That´s why I never made any money in Brighton, though I was driving all the time. In Zurich there is an average of 25 Swiss franks per fare - you just sit on the rank and relax and still you make your money. Yet, we need not just high tarifs, because that looses us customers, we need smart tarifs. The fact, that in B&H there was a negative short-distance-fare, the bloody meter just didn´t count before you went about 500 yards, led to a overproportional amount of short fares, around 3-4 pounds, not use of taxis, but abuse. In Freiburg, Germany, the ground-fare is relatively high, plus the first two k´s are 50% higher, (in Brighton that would mean basically no fare under 5 pounds). Long distance yet is relatively cheaper, encouraging more people to take a cab for those too. That is the only way!!!! |
