Three held over taxi driver robbery in Lowther Street

9:42am Wednesday 30th June 2010

Three people have been arrested following the robbery and assault of a taxi driver in York.

A 23-year-old woman, a 55-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth, all from the York area were taken into custody before being released on bail.

Detectives made a plea for witnesses, house-to-house inquiries and searched CCTV in the area following the attack at about 3am on Sunday, when the 64-year-old driver was called to pick up a fare in Lowther Street.

When driver got out of the silver-coloured taxi to ring a door bell, he was confronted by two men who were dressed in dark clothing.

One of the men struck the driver with an implement. The other man then smashed the window of the taxi and stole takings and other items both ran off in the direction of York St John’s University.

The driver suffered a bruised arm and was left in a shocked state following the incident.
