Leeds cabbie 'rescues' lost pupils
30 June 2010
A Leeds minicab driver has been hailed a hero after coming to the rescue of 50 travel weary school children.
Eddy Huntington, deputy head teacher of Rosebrook Primary School in Stockton on Tees, got in touch with the Yorkshire Evening Post to sing the praises of the "good Samaritan", who worked for In Time private hire in Harehills.
He had been leading a 120-mile round trip to The Royal Armouries in Leeds last Thursday when, along with two coach loads of youngsters, he got seriously lost.
The school party ended up two-and-a-half miles from the museum and were in danger of missing lunch as well as jousting and falconry exhibitions when they stopped for directions.
Eddy said: "We were getting nowhere fast.
"The cabbie said it was no good giving directions and asked me to get in his taxi while the two coaches followed in convoy.
"He kept stopping each time we lost one of the coaches.
"He really went all out to make sure we got there in one piece and kept saying "it's for the kids" to get them there safe and to have a good time.
"And when we did get there he didn't want paying.
"I don't know whether you celebrate local heroes but he just needed a pat on the back for doing something like that.
"I am ashamed for not even knowing his name.
"It's been years since I was last in Leeds, perhaps 20 years, and I always found the people really friendly. This man's actions were certainly a great advert for the city."
The YEP tracked down driver Zahoor Ahmed, 41, who took the praise in his stride. He said: "They all looked really disappointed– it was hot and nearly dinner time.
"They were red in the face and tired and wanted to get off the coach. At the end of the day if you can help someone then why not?"
