A short cut for cabbies

29 Jun 2010

Furious taxi drivers claim they're being sent home by busybody council wardens - for wearing SHORTS.

Angry cabbies also said they'd been given a dressing down for turning out in sandals and multi-coloured t-shirts during the recent summer heatwave.

And even tracksuits have been ruled too scruffy by the fussy taxi officials in Bellshill, Lanarkshire.

Driver Derek McGregor, 32, accused a warden of pulling him off the road because of his clothing.

He said: "I was wearing three-quarter length trousers which came to about four inches above my shoes.

"When the warden spotted them he told me I was showing too much leg and to go straight home and change.

"It's ludicrous. It was a really hot day. It isn't exactly comfortable."

Fellow cabbie Donald Paterson, 39, was also sent home for wearing tracksuit bottoms after the random check.

He said: "Everything else was in order - my licence was fine and my car was clean and roadworthy.

"But the council official said wearing tracksuit trousers was no good - even though most of the time no one can see our legs."

And another of the town's drivers blasted North Lanarkshire Council for the crackdown.

He said: "The council has done all it can to make life difficult.

"We're trying hard to provide a good service but if we're being sent home because of the trousers we're wearing then we're losing money.

"The credit crunch is biting and daft rules like this are a pain in the neck."

More than two-thirds of drivers stopped earlier this month were warned about their clobber. But council bosses DENIED anyone was sent home during the police-backed checks.

Council legal chief June Murray said: "Our officer spoke with 16 drivers, 11 of whom were reminded of the dress code and advised to adhere to it. No driver was ordered off the road."

I wonder if that rule applies to the female drivers?

Toots take it from me you do not want women taxi drivers in Dundee showing to much leg, well apart from my friend Donna

Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your point of view) we don't all live in Dundee

Our council is sexist, men have to wear shirts with a collar and jeans (no rips) or dress trousers, women can wear the above or shorts or skirt
On a hot day when your working at gas mark 6 or above in the mobile oven we should be allowed to wear shorts like the women but the council says no, the kilt yes but even with the under ventilation  its to hot

I think our council is quite fair when it comes to dress codes. It only allows for tailored shorts and they must fall below the knees. The fall being the length of the shorts and not the action of them literally falling, before you lot get any bright ideas   Having said that it makes not one iota of difference to some here who still wear holiday type shorts to work with vest tops, it's quite disgusting as none of them are the Adonis they like to think they are

I had a very nice tour around Dundee second to last time I was in Scotland.

Lovely views from the top of that hill thing.

Surely the male natives in Jockistan can wear those skirt things without fear of feeling the hand of the council man?
