A VOLUNTARY taxi drivers' code could be set up in Morpeth.
The Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade is in discussions with several companies and drivers to set clear standards of service.

Chamber Chairman John Beynon said: "We want to get the drivers signed up and then we can say the Chamber of Trade recommends those taxis.

"We can give them stickers, saying 'Chamber of Trade approved'. Hopefully that will get other drivers to join in.

"What we are aiming for is taxis which are smart cars, with smartly dressed, polite drivers, who know the area."

The issue will go before the chamber's committee and come back to the full group with recommendations on the details

The new 'byelaws' and 'conditions' are being drawn up by Northumberland, I trust this is a more localised thing just for Morpeth, and nothing to do with taxi licensing.
