Driver admits careless driving caused death

Tue Jul 06 09:13:21 BST 2010

A taxi driver has admitted causing the death of a teenager on a Preston road.

Alex Cameron Young, 17, was killed as he crossed Tom Benson Way, close to Preston Sports Arena, in Cottam, with a group of friends on May 30 last year.

Christopher Clamp, 53, of Elton Street, Preston, pleaded guilty to causing Alex’s death by careless driving at Preston Crown Court after the Crown Prosecution Service said it could not prove his driving had been “dangerous”.

Kirsten McAteer, prosecuting, told court: “Prosecution can not say for how long Alex was in the road prior to the collision or how far away from him the vehicle driven by the defendant was at the point Alex entered the road.”

The court heard Clamp had swerved to avoid the pedestrians rather than breaking to a halt on the evening of the tragic accident.

Judge Robert Brown said there was no evidence Clamp was speeding and accident investigators concluded his speed had been around 34mph on the 40mph road.

Miss McAteer said: “A number of young witnesses witnessed a most distressing incident.

“The defendant had, rather than braking to a halt, tried to steer around at least two people, possibly more, crossing the road.”

Clamp denied a charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was due to stand trial this week. However, after discussions within the CPS he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

Defence barrister Jon Close asked for a pre-sentence report to be prepared. Clamp has been bailed and will be sentenced on August 6.

However, Judge Brown warned him all sentencing options will be available to him.

Today the Ingol Community Association, which helped raise money for the bench off Tom Benson Way in Alex’s honour, called for the speed limit on the stretch to be dropped.

Gordon Wang, of the group, said: “It is a footpath crossing and it should be reduced to perhaps 30 or even 20 along that section, because it is a popular path not just for kinds but for families as well. Anything that can reduce deaths has got to be looked at.”

Bill Shannon, Preston councillor for Ingol, said his major concern was traffic using Tag Lane, but added: “At the south end of Tom Benson Way the sight lines are not that good so maybe the 40mph zone should start higher up.

Alex, from Lyndhurst Avenue, Ashton, was a former Fulwood High School and Arts College pupil and had enrolled on a Government training scheme.

His mum Beverley Cameron Young said after his death: “Alex was a much-loved young man.”
