Man who attacked Portsmouth taxi driver jailed

Friday, 9 July 2010 21:39 UK

A 35-year-old man who assaulted a taxi driver in Portsmouth has been jailed for 18 months.

Police said the taxi driver, 36, from Portsmouth, was driving along Albert Road in Southsea, when he saw a fight at about 2215 BST on 27 December 2009.

He got out of his car to intervene, thinking a woman was being attacked, but was assaulted by Jonathan Murphy.

Murphy, of Jubilee Avenue, who pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding earlier, was ordered to pay £500 compensation.

DC David Anderson, from Portsmouth CID, said: "This was a nasty, drink-fuelled attack on an innocent member of the public.

"The driver saw what he thought was Murphy attacking a woman so he got out of his car to help.

"Murphy pushed the driver to the ground and bit him on his cheek, an injury which required stitches on both the inside and outside of his mouth and has left him scarred for life."

Maybe, but I wonder why the driver left his vehicle?

I know what you mean but surely thats the job of the Police.....besides, maybe shouting that he was going to get the police from his cab widow may have been effective?
