Crackdown on illegal taxi drivers in Hull
Sunday, 11 July 2010 11:41 UK
A crackdown on illegal taxi drivers by Hull City Council has led to a number of prosecutions and cautions.
Action has been taken against 10 taxi and private hire drivers for offences such as working without a licence and carrying passengers who had not booked.
The council said sentences ranged from formal warnings and cautions, to prosecutions with fines and costs of as much as £960.
Councillor Elaine Garland said illegal drivers would continue to face action.
She said: "The vast majority of taxi operators in the city work legally and provide a valuable service.
"However, we will not tolerate the actions of a few drivers who are prepared to put their own financial gain above the safety of their passengers, and who effectively steal work from other drivers."
